This was May 13 at 3:30pm in the 135th St station of the B/C. Note the one arresting officer repeatedly telling the other to “relax.” The young man being arrested puts his leg up just so they don’t slam his face into the wall. When I turned my camera to catch the officers streaming into the station, two of them came behind me and one officer (Mancebo?) pushed me out of the station and would not let me turn around. Afterwards, I counted twelve police cars around the station.

“….Part of the problem is that white and Hispanic (as well as black and Hispanic) are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Saying somebody is half Mexican and half white is as meaningless as saying someone is half Canadian and half white or half American and half white. Mexican isn’t a race; you can be 100% Mexican AND 100% white. If they really are talking about mestizos, then perhaps they should have a mestizo category (if they must have categories).

In my experience however, I’ve found that most white Hispanics relish the fact that they’re considered “people of color” in the US. They’re excused the burden of “white guilt”, and qualify for affirmative action, and so forth.

I remember a few years back on the show “Survivor” they had a season where they broke up the cast by ‘races’, and they had a “white tribe”, an “Hispanic tribe”, and a “black tribe”, and perhaps an Asian tribe. But the crazy thing was, all the Hispanics were clearly white; there wasn’t even a mestizo in the bunch. When most people from outside the US saw this, they were confused. But Americans saw nothing odd about it because they’re conditioned to seeing white people with Spanish last names called “non-white”. It’s really weird.

If that weren’t odd enough, at the same time, Italians, Greeks, and other people of Southern European backgrounds who are often at least as swarthy as the darkest Spaniard are considered white. Americans apparently do not see anything weird or inconsistent about this.

Ironically, what finally got America talking about “white Hispanics” was George Zimmerman, which is odd, because even though Zimmerman is half “non-Hispanic white”, he is clearly mestizo (i.e. not a “white Hispanic”).

It’s as though Americans have come to think of Spaniards as non-whites; even if someone is 100% European Spanish, they would think that means they aren’t white. It’s actually a view of race I find hard to distinguish from Nazi-like Nordicism (though even Hitler regarded the Spanish as white). The weird thing is, in the US, this curious brand of “neo-Nordicism” seems to be viewed as part of a ‘progressive’ world view. But frankly, I don’t think most Americans have any ideological agenda here; they’re simply ignorant and they repeat what they hear in the media…” - Joseph G.

Lone Indian Man Plants 1,360 Acre Forest single-handedly!!

A little over 30 years ago, a teenager named Jadav “Molai” Payeng began burying seeds along a barren sandbar near his birthplace in northern India’s Assam region to grow a refuge for wildlife. Not long after, he decided to dedicate his life to this endeavor, so he moved to the site where he could work full-time creating a lush new forest ecosystem. Incredibly, the spot today hosts a sprawling 1,360 acre of jungle that Payeng planted single-handedly.

It all started way back in 1979 when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day, after the waters had receded, Payeng , only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead reptiles. That was the turning point of his life.

“The snakes died in the heat, without any tree cover. I sat down and wept over their lifeless forms. It was carnage. I alerted the forest department and asked them if they could grow trees there. They said nothing would grow there. Instead, they asked me to try growing bamboo. It was painful, but I did it. There was nobody to help me. Nobody was interested,” says Payeng, now 47.

While it’s taken years for Payeng’s remarkable dedication to planting to receive some well-deserved recognition internationally, it didn’t take long for wildlife in the region to benefit from the manufactured forest. Demonstrating a keen understanding of ecological balance, Payeng even transplanted ants to his burgeoning ecosystem to bolster its natural harmony. Soon the shadeless sandbar was transformed into a self-functioning environment where a menagerie of creatures could dwell. The forest, called the Molai woods, now serves as a safe haven for numerous birds, deers, rhinos, tigers, and elephants — species increasingly at risk from habitat loss elsewhere.

Despite the conspicuousness of Payeng’s project, Forestry officials in the region first learned of this new forest in 2008 — and since then they’ve come to recognize his efforts as truly remarkable, but perhaps not enough.

“We’re amazed at Payeng,” says Assistant Conservator of Forests, Gunin Saikia. “He has been at it for 30 years. Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero.”

Randy Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering, and his team developed a device that launches a ring of plasma at distances of up to two feet. Although the plasma reaches a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, it doesn’t emit radiation and is completely safe in proximity to humans.

I love Grace Slick so much based on her music and quotes alone but love her even more in interview. She’s funny in the way I’m funny…with a completely straight face (she’s an outrageous fellow Scorpio and it shows). So aware and real, especially talking about her past drug use which she has nothing at all against. I also especially like what she says about aging yet “never growing up” and keeping the inner child alive (in so many words). Good perspective.
